About Low Lives:
Founded in 2009 by artist and independent curator Jorge Rojas, the annual Low Lives exhibition highlights works that critically investigate, challenge, and extend the potential of performative practices. The project celebrates the transmission of ideas beyond geographical and cultural borders, offering global audiences the opportunity to consider live performance in both physical and virtual space.

By organizing performances at numerous venues and then broadcasting them via online networks, Low Lives provides a new model for efficiently presenting, viewing, and archiving live performance-based art. The annual exhibition embraces low-tech aesthetics, such as low pixel images and muddled sound quality, to emphasize the raw, inquisitive quality of the broadcast and reception of the works.

“Low Lives is not simply about the presentation of performative gestures at a particular place and time,” Rojas explains, “it is also about the transmission of these moments and what gets lost, conveyed, blurred, and reconfigured when utilizing this medium.”

About Low Lives 3

Low Lives 3 is co-produced by Chez Bushwick, an artist-run organization based in Brooklyn, New York. Chez Bushwick is dedicated to the advancement of interdisciplinary art and performance and places a special emphasis on new choreography.

About Jenny Schlief

:
Jenny Schlief is a mixed-media artist who creates work from her personal experiences — home movies of her two kids, a video of her jumping on a hotel room bed in her skivvies and collage-centric drawing projects based on her high-school sketchbook — that usually border on her uncomfortable-to-share feelings. In Low Lives 3, the Houston-based artist will capture a live personal evaluation from a close peer that she has known for 10 years. Since the performance will happen in real time, it will be a performance of real human interaction and event. Thereʼs no way out, and all reactions are real and unrehearsed. Schlief took the title of the performance, The Ugliest Man and Zarathustra: an evaluation by another human, from a passage in a book by Neitzche, where she hopes to assume the character of The Ugliest Man, and her evaluator, Zarathustra. Schlief lives and works in Houston, TX as the co-founder of Supreme Value, a web services and design business, and runs the gallery Red White Yellow located inside Box13 ArtSpace. She received her B.F.A. from the University of Texas (Austin). Visit http://www.jennyschlief.com/ for more on Schlief and her work.

(See the article here too:)

Over the past five years, web-based programs such as YouTube and Flickr have revolutionized the distribution of visual information. What this means for art remains an open question. Ryan Lauderdale is on the forefront of unlocking the potential of digital technologies to transform artistic practice. Part public sketchbooks and part publishing, his Tumblr blog (astralzoo.tumblr.com) and Flickr site record the development of his artistic language and allow him to get feedback on his work. Lauderdale also uses the internet to inspire his aesthetic– a reductive, asymmetric array of symbols and shapes that alludes to the arrangement of windows or icons on a computer screen.

Even though he looks to the future with his use of digital media, the artist’s work is curiously populated with references to a 1990s psychedelic, suburban subculture that predates widespread use of the internet. Lauderdale thus uses contemporary technologies to look back, filter, and rearrange his past, particularly his teenage years in rural Oklahoma. The focal point of his exhibition HEADSPACE is “Spiro Projection,” a video he shot while dragging main in his hometown. Lauderdale inserted clips from old videotapes and found images that conjure memories of his youth into the footage. In front of the projector, a prism and plexiglas box fragment the video and cast reflections across the surrounding walls. A burning black taper candle, a lamp with an opaque inverted shade, and a small full-spectrum lamp behind a false wall are likewise dispersed throughout the room in a scattering of soft lights.

Sometimes Lauderdale’s references to psychedelic culture can get bogged down in a heavy-handed symbolism or nostalgia. This installation works because it leans toward abstraction. The artist’s open, improvised approach to HEADSPACE makes the work easier to enter and a more coherent visual experience. His subtle use of light and shadows create these beautiful, small gestures like where two poster tubes border a refracted shard of light. I also like that the installation doesn’t take itself too seriously. With dark posters clustered in a corner and objects sitting on the ground, the room is as comfortable as a teenage bedroom. I felt free to sit crosslegged on the floor, relax, and take it all in.

One of the artist’s greatest challenges is taking what is successful for him online and making it function in physical space. In HEADSPACE, his sculptures and digital collages feed off of each other and together are evolving in an innovative direction. However, I would like to see Lauderdale think even more critically about the conceptually loaded territory that he has walked into. In juxtaposing the aesthetics of psychedelia and contemporary technologies, he has hit upon a potential dialectic of mass-marketed transcendence. HEADSPACE touches on issues of subjectivity, memory, and utopian dreams of collective consciousness. I look forward to seeing Lauderdale continue to delve deeper into these ideas in future installations.

RED WHITE YELLOW is pleased to present a series of never before shown claymation videos by New York artist, Jocelyn Shipley.

SHOW STATEMENT

Jocelyn is known for her sculptures and installations, all invoking cultish, visceral responses. In this particular series from her Skowhegan residency in 1997, Jocelyn creates strange narratives surrounding sex, death and mutilation. It’s a grossly beautiful and engaging collection of heads exploding and chronic masturbators. The originals are all on VHS tape, lending a nostalgic view of technology only a decade old.

Show Statement

All capitalistic canalization overflown. Here production follows a different agenda.

During Berlin winter 2007, Eilers and Xedro happened to be resident in a nearly empty post-soviet flat. A large side window was the master wall. There was this amazing space whose restroom area took more floor than it should have. A series of sculptures made out of scrap were expanding from the bathtub, set in the shower box like in a ready-to-be-alarmed vitrine. As I was previously told, any piece that entered that royal toilet was about to be demolished in a couple of hours. Hopefully there is a documentation of the smash – a film yet unknown at present date. In the main room: an inflatable used as a bed, a tent used as sporadic depo, a cage zone hosting a vertical, imaginary alcove for a music I had never heard before.

You see, the cage trope comes back. Like in Coolhaus, 2008, which makes you snoop into a fly-through cell scenario. A cell quite expensively studied, maybe a hotel room.

This whole body of works had a sleazy entity, not truly disturbing, not classifiable, and strange enough, not at all absorbing the vacant freedom of the environment. Assemblages of matter raising from the pavement, some hanging from the ceiling.

Initiated canvases were suspended like flags or rolled open like portrait carpets. Everything I saw in there had been generated, brought together to remain in fieri: conceptually and physically movable. Possibly slowly. Tentatively a convenience. In some way, that studio can determine in my memory a quality that blends discretion and eminence.

Just tell me one thing, one infinite Kurt Schwitters column, how would it look today?

Transparent cans filled with garbage to support a table desk. Pieces of everyday life communication are converted into art objects and thereby de-literalized – illusionistic spaces, a computer interface collage, rural economy: Screen grab, 2008 – are they content or are they form? They are neither.

As I recall, I know you love to show off. But I never thought that you would take it this far. – Francesca Lacatena
